High Island Reservoir East Dam in Sai Kung (UNESCO Global Geopark)

October 1st, 2020, a public holiday in Hong Kong. Together with other vloggers and videographers (and their great friends) I was on the trail in Sai Kung. Together, we visited the East Dam of the High Island Reservoir. The result is this video here.

Special thanks to my YouTube friends Team Fridays (Channel), Inday Gen_Jean (Channel), and Anne Almene (Channel). I linked their channels also in my video, feel free to follow and support them.

How to get there

By Bus
Take bus no. 94 departing from Sai Kung town centre or bus no. 96R departing from Diamond Hill MTR station (weekends and public holidays only) and get off just after Pak Tam Chung. Walk along Tai Mong Tsai Road to the junction ahead. Turn right on Sai Kung Man Yee Road and walk about 9 km.

By Taxi
Take a taxi from Sai Kung town centre or Pak Tam Chung to the geo-trail at the East Dam, High Island Reservoir.

About the hike

It’s a great hike around Hong Kong’s most giant reservoir, located in Sai Kung. The trail is mainly flat and paved and suitable for all fitness levels. You get some great views, especially from both dams.

To reach the final destination is also relatively easy. Just follow the route until you can see the East Dam of the High Island Reservoir. The whole hike will take you around 4 hours. Alternatively, you may also take a taxi at the East Dam back to Sai Kung Town.

What you can see at the east dam

  • High Island Reservoir and the High Island Reservoir Monument
  • The Hong Kong Geopark Park Sign
  • Hexagonal Rock Columns
  • Dolosse Wall
  • Sea Stack
  • Long Ke Wan Beach is just nearby (30-minutes hike only, around 1,5 km)
  • Rocks Cliff Wall

You can find a lot of information on the official webpage of the Hong Kong Geopark.
